Where Comal Jail Releases Go

Leaving the Comal County Jail ends one jail episode. It does not always mean a return to the community. A person may leave after posting a cash, surety, or personal bond, after receiving credit for time served, or under another court order. The person may also be transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, another county, a treatment placement, or a federal custodian. The release disposition and receiving-agency fields determine which event occurred.

A bond shows that the jail released the person while the criminal case continues. It does not establish a dismissal or final judgment. A transfer has an equally narrow meaning: Comal County stopped holding the person, but another authority may now have custody. Check the county's Judicial Record Search under Jail Records and Jail Bond Records, then match the charge and case number with Criminal Case Records. When the disposition names another custodian, continue with that agency rather than treating the county departure as community release.

Confirm a Comal Jail Release

The live jail roster is not a released-person archive. A person who no longer appears may have left, transferred, or been omitted for another reason. Use a released-first search that connects the correct identity to the correct booking. Name alone is weak evidence, especially when two people share it.

1. Open the Comal County Judicial Record Search and select Jail Records. Search the booked name and compare any available booking, arresting-agency, charge, and date details.
2. Check Jail Bond Records when bond may explain the departure. Then open Criminal Case Records to see whether the case is pending or has a signed disposition.
3. If the portal does not answer the question, call Corrections at 830-620-3450 or Criminal/Jail Records at 830-620-3412 for routing. Ask for the specific booking episode.
4. Submit a narrow written request for the booking-out record, actual release date and time, release type, and receiving agency if transferred.

TDCJ's public locator includes current TDCJ prisoners, not an ordinary Comal bond-out. A former TDCJ prisoner may require the agency's free email information service.

Comal Jail Records and Contact

Comal County routes jail open-record requests to the Criminal/Jail Records Division. Requests must be written. The county expressly offers an online request form, in-person delivery, and fax delivery. A printable form is also available. The page lists an email contact, but its instructions do not expressly promise that email alone counts as submission.

Describe the record, not just the person. Include the full booked name, approximate incarceration dates, and booking or Sheriff number if known. Request the booking-in and booking-out record, actual release date and time, release reason, bond record, and receiving agency or transfer document. The county says requests are handled in date order and may take up to ten business days. Pages one through forty are free; later pages cost ten cents each, and large requests may carry research or assembly charges. Exact cash or a money order is required for assessed fees.

Inside Comal County Jail

The Comal County Sheriff's Office operates this county jail. It holds people booked in Comal County and may house people for other counties or federal agencies when space permits. New Braunfels and Bulverde police materials indicate that qualifying arrestees are taken to the county jail rather than held in a separately verified municipal release archive. The arresting police agency may retain the incident report, the Sheriff keeps the booking and release material, and a court clerk holds the case disposition.

Those roles matter in a records request. Comal County notes that material in its files can originate with New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, Garden Ridge, Fair Oaks, DPS, municipal courts, or the county's justice courts. The records office may direct a requester to the actual holder. That referral is not proof the record does not exist. It identifies the office responsible for the requested document.

The official facility description supports the transfer warning: a person can leave this building while another county or federal authority continues custody.

Federal Releases from Comal Jail

Comal County says federal inmates may be housed at the jail, but no source identifies the facility as an ICE contract site. The word “federal” cannot be converted into ICE custody, a BOP sentence, or release to the community. A federal pretrial detainee may remain under U.S. Marshals Service authority while sleeping in a county bed.

Start with the receiving authority on the jail record. Use the BOP Inmate Locator after commitment to BOP. A BOP result marked Released or Not in BOP Custody means the person left BOP custody, but another system or federal supervision may still apply. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only when an immigration transfer is actually indicated. ICE may retain some adult release information for sixty days, yet a failed search is not proof of release.

For a U.S. Marshals transfer, use the federal case docket and the named receiving facility. USMS has no public historical release locator comparable to BOP. The jail's transfer document is therefore central to choosing the right federal path.

Property After a Comal Release

Comal publishes specific deadlines for property left after a jail release. Personal property must be collected within thirty days. Commissary delivered at release must be collected within seventy-two hours, and the county states that commissary funds are not refunded at release. These are different deadlines and should not be combined.

A person transferred to TDCJ, a state jail, or another institution must name a specific collector and supply that person's phone number. The current property instructions control the pickup. Call before traveling if the release occurred near a weekend or holiday, and do not assume the release desk can hold property beyond the posted period.

Question: Does a transfer stop the property clock? The county's instructions do not create that exception. The transferred person should identify a collector promptly and follow the posted authorization process.

Which Comal Jail Address Applies?

Old Comal County Jail records may point to a prior building. Inmates were held in the historic courthouse from 1939 through 1985. The Walter Fellers Law Enforcement Center then opened with 144 beds and expanded to 337 beds in 1999. The current jail at 3000 IH 35 South opened in August 2020 with 582 beds and infrastructure for later expansion.

This history explains conflicting addresses in archived bookings. It does not change which office handles a current request. Use the IH-35 address for present jail operations and Criminal/Jail Records. Preserve the older facility name in a request when it appears on the original booking so staff can locate the right episode.

After the record is found, verify the actual release disposition. A historic address establishes where the episode occurred, not whether it ended by bond, sentence completion, or transfer.
