Understanding Comal County Releases

“Released” identifies the end of custody by one named agency. At Comal County Jail, it may mean bond, time served, a court order, dismissal with release, transfer, or another disposition. The word does not by itself mean that the criminal case ended. It also does not prove the person returned to the community. A transfer ends the county jail's physical custody while state, federal, immigration, or another county custody may continue.

The record trail is divided among offices. The Sheriff holds booking and operational release material. Comal's Odyssey portal separates Jail Records, Jail Bond Records, and Criminal Case Records. A clerk's signed order explains the legal outcome, while the jail record supplies the actual processing time. TDCJ documents a later state-prison episode. This split is why a single name search can produce an incomplete answer.

How Comal Bond Release Works

A Comal County bond-out confirms that the jail episode ended while the criminal case remained open. It does not mean the charge was dismissed or the sentence was complete. The county recognizes cash, surety, and personal bonds. A surety bond involves an approved bondsman, while a personal bond is authorized through the court process rather than purchased from a bondsman.

The Comal County Bail Bond Office publishes an approved bondsman list that rotates weekly. Jail staff may not recommend a company. The county also warns that jail staff will not call a family member to demand bond money. Its posted payment instructions call for an exact money order or cashier’s check and reject online or wire payments. Those local safeguards matter whenever someone claims payment will trigger an immediate Comal County release.

Comal County Release Types

The release notation controls the next check. Comal County distinguishes cash, surety, and personal bonds. A bond permits departure while the case proceeds. Time served generally means credited custody satisfied the confinement ordered in that case, though another hold can still prevent community release. Parole and mandatory supervision follow TDCJ custody, not a routine county bond-out. Probation, called community supervision in Texas, is imposed and administered through the courts and local supervision department.

Comal’s bond instructions add local safeguards. The approved bondsman list rotates weekly, and jail staff cannot recommend a company. The county warns that the jail will not call demanding bond money. Its posted payment method uses exact money order or cashier’s check, not an online transfer or wire. Always follow the current county instructions.

Fields in Comal Release Records

A useful release record ties the event to one booking. Request the full booked name and aliases, Sheriff or jail identifier, booking number, booking time, arresting agency, charge or hold, bond amount and type, court number, releasing facility, actual release date and time, release reason, and destination if transferred. The live Odyssey detail could not be verified during the research, so these are request fields, not a claim about every label displayed online.

Read each field narrowly. A bond record does not establish acquittal. A court dismissal does not, by itself, state the minute the jail processed departure. “Transfer” is not the same as freedom. When exact legal effect matters, obtain the signed court order as well as the jail release document.

Request Comal County Release Records

The Criminal/Jail Records Division accepts written jail-record requests through the county's online request form, in person at 3000 IH 35 South, or by fax at 830-608-0147. The official instructions list 830-620-3412 for routing and office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The page also displays an email contact, but its narrative does not expressly promise email submission.

1. Identify the booked person and approximate incarceration dates. Add the booking or Sheriff number if known.
2. Ask for the booking-in and booking-out record, actual release date and time, release type, bond entry, and the receiving agency or transfer paper.
3. Choose an offered delivery preference and request an electronic copy when available. Keep the request narrow.
4. Pay any assessed charge by the accepted method before expecting delivery.

The county says requests are processed in date order and may take up to ten business days. Pages one through forty are free. Later pages cost ten cents each, while large requests may include research or assembly fees. Exact cash or money order is accepted for jail-record charges. Medical records require in-person pickup with identification. Public Information Act exceptions and routine redactions still apply.

The official page confirms why a written, booking-specific request is the reliable fallback when the online jail or bond archive does not show the needed release fact.

Access to Comal Release Records

Texas Government Code Chapter 552, the Public Information Act, governs access to county records. It provides a request process, not a promise that every field is public. Dates of birth, driver's-license numbers, Social Security numbers, medical material, juvenile information, and protected investigative facts may be withheld or redacted. The local retention schedule treats the jail register as permanent and generally preserves booking-in, booking-out, and release-order records for release or transfer plus two years. A web entry may disappear before the underlying record reaches its retention limit.

Expunction and nondisclosure are separate remedies with fact-specific requirements. An expunction is a court process that can require agencies named in an order to remove qualifying records. Nondisclosure generally restricts public access to a qualifying record but is not the same remedy. Neither result should be inferred merely because an online jail entry can no longer be found.

Who Gets Comal Expunction Orders?

Comal’s expunction instructions show why one request to one clerk does not clear every copy. The petition and order may need to identify the Sheriff, jail, county and district clerks, magistrate, information technology office, police, municipal court, and other holders. Outside agencies or publishers must also be listed when they possess a relevant copy and the law permits relief.

The county lists a $25 certified-mail issuance fee for the petition and another $25 for the order for each agency without an email address. No corresponding certified-mail fee applies when an agency email is provided. The clerk’s routing work is distinct from deciding whether a person qualifies for expunction.

That routing list is a useful reminder that jail, court, police, and technical record copies may have different custodians.

Search Comal County Released Inmates

Start with custody scope. Comal County does not publish a separately verified rolling release feed, so the Odyssey Judicial Record Search is the local online starting point. Its Jail Records, Jail Bond Records, and Criminal Case Records categories answer different parts of the question. Match identifiers across them. Do not interpret disappearance from a current roster as release proof.

1. Search Jail Records for the custody episode, then Jail Bond Records when a bond-out is possible.
2. Match the charge and case number in Criminal Case Records. Obtain the signed order if the docket summary is unclear.
3. If the record shows a state transfer, search TDCJ after intake. For a former state prisoner, use TDCJ's email information service.
4. If it names a federal or immigration custodian, use BOP, USMS case records, or ICE according to that named authority.
5. When online sources fail, submit a written Comal jail-record request for the precise booking and release fields.

Three Comal Release Archives

Comal’s Odyssey landing page separates three archives that must be read together. Jail Records addresses the physical custody episode. Jail Bond Records can support a bond-out. Criminal Case Records shows the court path and disposition. None of the three should be stretched beyond its purpose.

This separation prevents two common errors. Release on bond does not mean the criminal case ended. A later dismissal also does not state the hour when jail staff processed the person out. Match the booked name, booking identifier, charge, and case number across all three categories. If the online entries do not resolve the timing, ask Criminal/Jail Records for the booking-out document and ask the proper clerk for the signed court order.

TDCJ Search After Comal Release

The TDCJ public inmate search includes people currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility. It is not a historical released-prisoner index, and it does not cover an ordinary Comal County Jail bond-out. Search by TDCJ number, SID number, or exact last name with at least a first initial. Gender and race are additional fields. TDCJ says working-day updates remain at least twenty-four hours old.

For a former prisoner, email TDCJ inmate information at pia@tdcj.texas.gov with the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number. If unknown, provide exact date of birth or approximate age and county of conviction. Ask for incarceration history and the actual release or discharge date and type. The service is free and does not provide photographs or Social Security numbers.

Comal Recent Release Options

No official Comal Sheriff page labeled as a rolling “released in the last 24 hours” or “72-hour releases” feed was verified. Odyssey's Jail and Jail Bond categories can help with a former booking, but the county does not publish the exact display fields, cadence, photo coverage, or retention. The site’s recent-release pages therefore explain date-bounded records requests rather than simulating a feed.

The Sheriff’s official iOS app advertises tips, sex-offender information, a staff directory, and news. Its current listing does not advertise inmate lookup, mugshots, or recent releases. It should not be treated as a hidden release list. For every release within a chosen window, request jail register or release-log entries between exact start and end dates and specify the needed fields.

Comal Supervision After Release

Probation and parole are not interchangeable. Caldwell, Comal and Hays Community Supervision and Corrections Department administers adult probation ordered by local courts. The sentencing docket is the public starting point because Texas has no public statewide list of every probationer. State parole and mandatory supervision follow TDCJ release. The Board of Pardons and Paroles decides release, while the TDCJ Parole Division supervises the person afterward.

Comal County maps to the Seguin District Parole Office in Region IV. Verify state supervision through TDCJ identifiers and the Parole Division, not the county probation office. The Comal parole and probation page separates the offices, decision records, and status contacts.

Comal Release Alerts and Transfers

Texas moved county VINE services to IVSS-Counties in September 2025. Comal's Sheriff routes users to that current county jail and court notification layer, while an older District Attorney page still says VINE/VINELink. Search by full or partial name or identifiers, then register for available phone, text, or email events. A person who left custody may no longer appear. An alert is useful for timing but is not the official release record.

TDCJ IVSS is separate and covers state prison, parole, and mandatory-supervision events. Notifications can help with timing, but the originating agency record remains the proof of the event.

Was a Comal Release Federal?

Comal County says the jail may house people for federal agencies or other counties when space permits. That statement does not establish an ICE contract. It also does not show whether a particular federal boarder belonged to the U.S. Marshals Service, BOP, ICE, or another authority. The jail release record’s receiving-agency field decides which route applies.

Use the BOP locator after commitment to BOP. A result marked Released or Not in BOP Custody means only that BOP custody ended. For a federal pretrial transfer, the federal case docket and named USMS receiving facility are more useful. Use the ICE locator only when immigration custody is indicated. ICE covers current adult detention and some records for sixty days after release, but a no-result does not prove community release.

Choose the Correct Comal Record

Each system speaks only for its own custodian. Crossing those boundaries creates false conclusions.

Comal County Release Facility

Comal County Jail is the only verified public detention facility in the county requiring a facility page. The Sheriff operates the current IH-35 jail, which opened in 2020. No separate municipal jail, TDCJ prison, BOP prison, or identified ICE detention site was verified within the county.

The facility description supports the key custody warning: the jail may hold other-county and federal inmates, so leaving this building does not always mean release to the community.

Property After Comal County Release

A Comal County release can start two different property clocks. Personal property left behind must be collected within 30 days. Commissary delivered at release must be collected within 72 hours, and the county states that commissary funds are not refunded at release. The shorter period should not be mistaken for the general property deadline.

A person transferred to TDCJ, a state jail, or another institution must identify a specific collector and provide that person’s phone number. The posted Comal property instructions control the process. A transfer does not suspend the published deadline, so the collector should be named without delay.

Which Comal Jail Address Applies?

Archived Comal County release records may name an older jail. People were held in the historic courthouse from 1939 through 1985. The 144-bed Walter Fellers Law Enforcement Center opened in 1985 and expanded to 337 beds in 1999. The current IH-35 jail opened in August 2020 with 582 beds and infrastructure for later growth.

Use 3000 IH 35 South, New Braunfels, for current jail operations and Criminal/Jail Records. Keep an old facility name or address in a records request when it appears on the original booking. It can help staff identify the correct episode, but it cannot show whether that episode ended through bond, time served, a court order, or transfer.
